How does acupuncture work?

Traditional theory is that there are Meridian Lines running all over the body. In the early days is was believed that in a healthy person energy ran along these lines without hindrance. When a person became unwell it was thought that the channels became blocked, and the energy was unable to flow freely. Acupuncture needles were inserted into points along these lines, and were stimulated at intervals until it was believed, that the energy could flow freely again.

Modern science has not been able to prove the existence of these energy lines. What is clear however is that the stimulation of acupuncture points sends impulses along the nerves to the spinal cord and the brain, setting up reflex patterns. Needling certain points can also cause the release of a number of hormones into the system. Firstly Endorphins may be released. These are the body’s own painkillers and anti-inflammatory agents.

Secondly, Serotonin levels may be increased, having a direct effect on mood and often causing an increased sense of well-being.
